About Us

OSGUG was started in 1990:

  1. to enable Glasgow graduates living in and around the Oxford area to establish and maintain contact with one another, by means of social and recreational events;
  2. to arrange and provide opportunities for such events, for members of the Society, their families and friends;
  3. to maintain contact with the University of Glasgow and take an interest in or promote as appropriate its academic pursuits and aspirations;
  4. to provide means of establishing and maintaining contact with other similar societies.

The society grew quickly and soon had more than 150 members.  The Society meets about 3 times per years in a social setting with a wide range of activities including biennial Burns Suppers, ceilidhs, visits to places of interest, informal lunches and talks by distinguished visitors from the University of Glasgow.

Sir William Kerr Fraser former Principal (1988 - 95) and Chancellor (1996 – 2006) of the University has graciously agreed to be our Patron.

The Annual General Meeting of the society is usually held in the spring to cover formal business matters including the election of the committee and to discuss members aims and aspirations for the coming year.

Thanks to the generosity and fund raising efforts of its members OSGUG has been able to donate in excess of £40,000 to the University of Glasgow.

Membership is open to all graduates and postgraduates of Glasgow University living and or working within travelling distance of Oxford with an annual subscription of £10 payable in March.  Members are encouraged to bring their spouses, partners and friends to OSGUG events which invariably generate a warm and friendly atmosphere.  I can assure all new members of a very warm welcome to the OSGUG events.

Further details of the society can be obtained from the Secretary by using the attached email link.

Best wishes
