News Letter No 24 August 2011

Dear Members

I am delighted to be the bearer of extremely good news from the University of Glasgow. The target of £10,000 set a year ago when we launched our Appeal on behalf of the Chancellor’s Fund has been attained. This is a marvellous achievement and is testament to the outstanding generosity of you, our members, as well as your continuing support for the future of the University. The Committee has left it to the discretion of the Trustees how they allocate the funds but we have asked to be informed in due course of the specific project selected and to have OSGUG’s name ascribed to it. The total amount donated to the University by OSGUG and its members now exceeds £90,000 a fact with which we can all be extremely proud. On behalf of the University in general and the Chancellor’s Fund in particular I wish to thank you all for your donations, your goodwill and your unwavering support.

On 14th May we had a very successful members’ lunch in Exeter College when the Principal, Professor Anton Muscatelli, attended. He outlined the future development strategy in pursuit of academic and research excellence on a worldwide stage. This will require strong and careful financial management but he assured us that all monies donated to the University Trust are strictly segregated from government course funding and they are channelled directly to enhance the student experience. He expressed his appreciation of OSGUG’s wonderful record of financial and moral support over 21 years and his hopes that our Society could be re-energised with new members.

The Development Office have been very helpful in providing a list of Glasgow University graduates in the area. We have redesigned the OSGUG brochure and propose to post one out to every candidate living within an hour’s drive of Oxford – about 450 people. I do hope this initiative will bear fruit and provide a new generation of members who can take OSGUG to new and even better heights. A copy of the brochure will also be placed on our website
www.osgug.org.uk .

I previewed our programme for the current year when I wrote about the Principal’s Lunch and I am pleased to confirm overleaf the dates for the next three meetings, the first of which will be in just over two weeks’ time here in Upper Basildon. I hope you will find the programme interesting and that many of you will be able to attend. I am conscious that a number of our members are not able to travel to our meetings but please do not feel disenfranchised from the Society. Just drop me a note or give me a call and I will be delighted to keep in touch.
